A lifecycle-based evaluation of greenhouse gas emissions from the plastics industry in South Africa

نویسندگان

چکیده

Increased production rates of plastic and limited disposal methods have fed concerns regarding environmental degradation. Whilst most the focus is on litter marine pollution, greenhouse gas emissions over its value chains are also interest non-trivial at global scale. To quantify warming potential local plastics industry, a lifecycle-based carbon footprint presented encompassing activities such as resource extraction, polymer conversion, recycling, stages. The South African sector estimated to emitted 15.8 Mt CO2 eq in 2015, with granulate stage bearing highest load. consumption fossil fuel based electricity burning waste contribute notably overall emissions. Additionally, recycling process 2015 saved approximately 1.4 emissions.Significance: Research has typically focused impacts end-of-life plastics, namely recycling. Despite growing concern, across chain not been investigated. Greenhouse arising from total 2015. Amongst lifecycle stages, resin had contribution Africa due country’s coal-based monomer process.

Greenhouse gas emissions from rice

Rice provides the staple food for over 60% of the world’s population. Globally 80% of rice is grown by small farmers in low income and developing nations, and in India rice farming is a key source of employment for the 60% of Indian workers still dependent on agriculture for work. Yet rice production is also an important source of greenhouse gas emissions, for example responsible for between 3 ...

Development of a Consistent Methodology for Estimating Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Oil and Gas Industry Operations

Understanding the sources and quantities of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is critical to developing an emissions inventory that accurately represents various oil and gas industry segment operations. To address this, the American Petroleum Institute (API) formed a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Methodology Working Group. The working group’s objectives were to review, summarize and recommend methodolo...

A Comparison of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions From the Sheep Industry With Beef Production in Canada

Sheep production in Canada is a small industry in comparison to other livestock systems. Because of the potential for expansion of the sheep industry in Canada, the GHG emissions budget of this industry was assessed in this paper. The GHG emissions from Canadian lamb production were compared with those from the Canadian beef industry using the ULICEES model. The GHG emission intensity of the Ca...
